Spain is a country with a rich history of winemaking and a myriad of grape varieties and styles. The best way to kick off your Spanish exploration is, of course, with bubbles.
Freixenet (frey-sha-ney) Cordon Negro Brut NV is a sparkling wine made the same way they make Champagne in France. The bubbles that tickle your nose are made from a second fermentation that occurs in the bottle. They're one of the oldest and largest producers in the Penedès region. Their Brut is a crisp and refreshing bubbly full of apple, melon, mandarin, and biscuit aromas. On the other side of the bubbles spectrum is Vicenza Vin Mousseux Método Charmat NV. This wine is made in the same manner as Prosecco and explodes with pineapple, peach, and marzapan flavours. Slightly off-dry and made with Verdejo and Airén, it's a nice side by side comparison of two styles of sparkling wine from the same country.
Save a bit of the Vicenza in your glass so you can compare it to the Fuego Verdejo 2018. The same grape, Verdejo, is in both wines but this time it's done in a dry easy drinking style. Mandarin, lime, and grapefruit zest with a hint of nuttiness make this a great wine to try if you’re looking for something a bit different than Sauv. Continue along Spain's famous Meseta Central, or Inner Plateau, and you'll arrive at Castilla-La Mancha where Viento Aliseo Rosé 2016 is made. Bobal is the grape variety here and it makes for a perfect rosé to enjoy on sunny winter days. Imagine biting into a perfectly ripe strawberry with notes of cherry blossom and red currant.
The plateau is 600meters high and its warm dry conditions make it a great home for heat loving varieties such as Garnacha (aka Grenache) and Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre). Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre blends are known as GSMs in Australia and are praised for their full body, intense fruit flavours, and smooth tannins. You'll also find similar blends throughout Spain. Bodegas Piqueras Black Label Organic Syrah Monastrell 2018 is one example. Mixed berries, black currants, black pepper, and lavender combine to make a rich full bodied winter warmer.
