Sacred Hill Deerstalkers Syrah 2016

A symphony of aromas on the nose, dark spice and liquorice give way to floral aromas of lavender and violets with dried thyme and rosemary, dark cherries and chocolate all adding complexity. The palate is silky with layers of sustained flavours that echo the complexity of the aromas. Fine, seamless tannins balance the gentle acidity and give depth and length on the finish. A Syrah to enjoy for its balance, individuality and distinction.

97/100, Sam Kim "Gloriously fruited and immensely complex, the wine shows sweet plum, mixed berry compote, smoked game, tar and cedar characters with a touch of pepper spice. It is superbly weighted and concentrated on the palate, displaying outstanding depth and expansive mouthfeel, wonderfully framed by plush tannins. Harmonious and symphonic with loads of engaging flavours. At its best: 2021 to 2031."

95/100, Andrew Caillard MW

19/20, Raymond Chan

95/100, Cameron Douglas MS "Very dark ruby and purple core with a ruby rim. Aromas of dark berries and pepper spices, vanilla and sweet clove. Additional aromas of blue fruits and a hint of new leather, baking spices and violets. Dry, nice core of fruit, lots of energy and texture on the palate with chalky tannins and plenty of acidity. Flavours reflect the nose. Complex, steely and haunting finish. A wine destined to age well. Best drinking 2022 through 2030."

In 2002 Sacred Hill had the opportunity to buy a rare piece of land on the Gimblett Gravels. At the heart of it, but not included, sat the rustic clubrooms of the Deerstalkers Association on 10 acres of prime grape growing land. We offered to purchase the land and relocate the clubrooms to wherever they wished to build. The Hawke’s Bay Deerstalkers Association now has the finest clubrooms in the country, and we create memorable Gimblett Gravel wines where the clubrooms used to stand - wines that just so happen to go perfectly with game.
