Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley, France, where it produces medium bodied red wines with beautiful fruit profiles. It was around 1830 when it reached Australia and the Aussies originally used Syrah for fortified wines but once they soon discovered its potential. The name Shiraz then followed when the uniqueness of Aussie Syrah was truly realised.
Belles du Sud Grenache Syrah 2019 (Languedoc, France) Grenache and Syrah love the warm, sunny climate of France’s Languedoc region. Winemakers here have a bit more leeway with what they can do than those in the rest of France, and the Languedoc is known for making high-quality wines at everyday prices. This wine is no exception. Fragrant with aromas of ripe cherry, strawberry, and plum followed by a subtle spice. The palate is smooth and supple with a wonderful fruitiness and long finish.
Hinemoa Moana Syrah Merlot Malbec 2014 (Omaha, NZ) Hinemoa Estate overlooks the beautiful Omaha Beach, just 40 minutes north of Auckland. The vineyards sit facing north to maximise the grapes exposure to the sun, especially over the long, warm NZ summers. Syrah does well here, and when blended with Merlot and Malbec this delicious Moana blend was born. 2014 was a good year in the north and after 5 years ageing in the bottle we think it’ll be great to drink now. Think a deep ruby in the glass with notes of forest fruits, white pepper and French oak - let it breathe for a bit and then dive in.
Killibinbin Scream Shiraz 2018 (South Australia) Dark purple in colour. Intense plums, vanilla and red fruits with a hint of spice and freshly grated nutmeg on the nose. The mid palate is weighty and generous, the fine tannins offer a firm structure now but will develop a velvety texture as the wine ages.
McPherson Shiraz 2019 (South Eastern Australia) Black cherry, blueberry and mixed spice nose. Ripe blackberries, plums and a hint of pepper on the palate. Try this wine with Char-grilled steak or a rich, spicy tomato based pasta dish such as Spaghetti Bolognaise or Lasagne – a perfect match!
Pure Organic Shiraz 2019 (Spain) Typical Shiraz notes of blackcurrant, cocoa, cherry, and spice are most obvious and mix and mingle well on the palate. There’s good acidity and the tannins are grippy but unobtrusive. Its dry on the finish and will leave you wanting more. Drink now!
San Sebastião Syrah-Tinta Roriz 2018 (Portugal) A unique expression of Syrah and Tinta Roriz, also known as Tempranillo. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, this wine is packed full of fruit flavour. Enticing aromas of juicy plum and blackberry are followed by a touch of wet earth and truffle. The wine doesn’t disappoint on the palate and is silky smooth with a vibrant, clean finish. An excellent partner to roast pork or red meat dishes.
