A lovely hand-crafted Chardonnay from one of New Zealand’s top Chardonnay growing regions, Gisborne on the east Cape of the North Island. Big, buttery, and oaky, the way Chardonnay used to be.
Wine: Hihi Chardonnay 2016
Region: Gisborne, NZ
Hihi Wines is a small boutique winery based in Ormond, Gisborne. The label was launched in 2005 with 200 cases sold in the first year. It has grown rapidly with 2,000 cases sold in 2012. Sixty award winning wines have been produced. Hihi means "Rays of the Sun" with all grapes sourced from sunny Gisborne, the first city in the world to see the sunrise. Hihi is also rare NZ bird, also known as the Stitchbird, and it graces Hihi’s revamped labels.
4 Stars (17.5/20) Raymond Chan
Bright, full yellow colour with light golden hues and some depth. This has a fresh, elegantly concentrated and full nose with yellow stone-fruit and citrus fruit aromas, along with lifted lemon-curd MLF notes which build in depth with aeration. Medium-bodied, the palate is up-front with sweetly rich flavours of ripe citrus fruits and tropical fruits interwoven with a layering of creamy and buttery MLF flavours. The palate is rich, luscious and rounded with a fine-textured guiding line and good acid vitality for balance. The mouth-filling flavours carry to a full, broad finish. This is an up-front rounded Chardonnay with mouth-filling citrus and tropical fruit flavours layered with creamy and buttery MLF. Drink this Chardonnay over the next 3 years. Fruit from the ‘Jackson’ vineyard, Patutahi, fermented in ‘Flextank’ barrels to 13.0% alc., the wine given American and French oak additions, and undergoing 100% MLF. 17.5/20
Prosecco is all the rage around the world and its easy to see why - the quality of many of the best French bubblies at a fraction of the price. This one is from Treviso and Venice Province. Pale lemon hue. Frothy mousse, white flower bouquet and vibrant crisp apple finish. Alc: 11% Read More
This GOLD MEDAL addition to the Holly reserve range is a luscious wine in a botrytised late harvest style. A first at Matahiwi for winemaker Jane Cooper, using a blend of 69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Riesling grapes. VINEYARD The fruit for this wine was sourced from the home vineyard in Opaki, and from the Manu vineyard to the west of Masterton. The grapes were left on the vines late into the autumn so as to develop the high sugar levels and botrytis saturation necessary to make the style of wine Jane wanted. WINEMAKING The fruit for this wine was hand-picked... Read More
Monkey 47 is an eccentric, pure gin distilled from 47 predominantly unusual, but regional botanicals, such as lingonberries, and blended with spring water. The story of Monkey 47 is attributed to an Indian born British Commander who was stationed in Germany after the second world war. Inspired by the Black Forest through the lens of his family’s heritage he combined British influence, Indian botanicals, and the natural flora of the German forest to create a complex gin he called Schwarzwald Dry Gin. A good third of the ingredients for this special gin come from the Black Forest and are definitely not... Read More
