Gemtree 'Luna Temprana' Tempranillo 2014

Luna is here, the goddess has arrived. Tempranillo, most typical of Spain, has been given a makeover in true McLaren Vale style. The winemakers of Gemtree have produced this young little beauty, all while following their commitment to organic (certified in 2011!) biodynamic and sustainable production. Minimal intervention in the vineyards, alongside a natural ferment and no filtration allows the Vale to shine through in your glass. Luna begins mysterious and subtle, but give it time and a little bit of air and you'll be suitably rewarded. Lush notes of cherry, plum and bright red berries dance on the palate, before finishing peppery with a hint of vanilla.

The 2014 Luna Temprana is a bright, fleshy, early drinking wine, similar to the Joven styles of Spain. Gemtree called the wine Luna Temprana as Temprana is youthful and early and Luna denotes the wine’s growth via the lunar cycle. Picked on fruit days, naturally fermented, with minimal intervention and no filtration this wine emphasises the true characteristics of the vineyard.

Crimson with purple hue, the nose has aromas of cranberries, raspberries, black olive, turmeric, prosciutto and red spices.

The palate is full of flavour, juicy and generous. Red berries and savoury notes carry through from the nose to the palate. The 2014 Luna Roja is a medium weight wine with balanced acidity, well integrated tannin with a hint of vanilla on the finish.

Gemtree is a certified organic wine producer

That means they don’t use herbicides and pesticides. To control weeds they let sheep graze between the vines and use an under vine mechanical weeder and slashers. Gemtree achieved organic certification in November 2011 and they are currently certified by Australian Certified Organics.

“Dark, deep black red colour with youthful purple hues, lighter on rim. This has a soft, fresh and full nose with up-front dark raspberry and plum fruit aromas along with boysenberry and jam elements… Medium full-bodied, plush and juicy flavours of raspberries, plums and boysenberry jam form a rounded and well-packed core. The fruit is carried by grainy tannin textures, growing in grip, leading to a structured finish encasing the fruit. This is an upfront, plush, primary-fruited Tempranillo with raspberry and boysenberry flavours and a dry, grainy-textured mouthfeel.
