This GOLD MEDAL addition to the Holly reserve range is a luscious wine in a botrytised late harvest style. A first at Matahiwi for winemaker Jane Cooper, using a blend of 69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Riesling grapes.
The fruit for this wine was sourced from the home vineyard in Opaki, and from the Manu vineyard to the west of Masterton. The grapes were left on the vines late into the autumn so as to develop the high sugar levels and botrytis saturation necessary to make the style of wine Jane wanted.
The fruit for this wine was hand-picked and then pressed, with a small portion being left to soak on the skins overnight. The juice was then transferred for fermentation with aromatic yeasts, two thirds in a stainless steel tank, with the remaining third of the juice being put into older French oak barrels, where they underwent a further 5 months of ageing. The wine was then lightly fined, and blended together in preparation for bottling.

You are greeted by youthful, fresh, ripe berry fruit aromas with notes of vanilla oak as the intense red coloured wine flows from the bottle. Full bodied dense ripe berry flavours with notes of vanillian oak but yet long and smooth. Best served with a red wine casserole or a juicy steak with red onion jam. Can be enjoyed now but would also reap benefits of further cellaring.Grapes: ShirazRegion: Coonawarra / PadthawayLocation: AustraliaAlcohol Content: 14.5%Awards: Double Gold - Finger Lake International Wine Competition 2015Gold - CWSA 2015Gold - International Wine Contest Bucharest 201589 points - James Halliday 2015 Approachable, easy... We've secured the remaining library stock of this prestigious Reserve Pinot Gris from Matakana Estate. Until now this lovely oaked Pinot Gris has only been available in select export markets and at Auckland Airport Duty Free stores for $42.50 per bottle. The Matakana region is proving to have great potential to produce quality Pinot Gris wines, and Matakana Estate's aim is to nurture the natural earthy stone-fruit character of this grape—along with the influence of our Matakana vineyard’s terroir. Pinot Gris has elegant fruit characters but the flavours are subtle. This ‘vigorous’ variety needs to be pruned heavily to reduce the yield per... Read More
