The Bay of Fires wines were born of a desire to showcase the best possible cool climate varietal wines Tasmania can offer, combining fruit intensity, refinement and persistence of flavour. The 2015 Chardonnay represents the continued evolution of this wine as they explore and develop vineyard resources. Bay of Fires philosophy is to nurture elegance and develop ripe flavour profiles.
Medium straw in colour with a green hue, this wine displays intense aromas of white peach & preserved lemon. Toasty oak with a hint of lemon curd will also feature in the wine whilst young and flinty mineral characters from wild ferment are also evident. This Chardonnay exhibits a smooth delicate palate with a mineral lemony acidity. Flavours of ripe stone fruit and grapefruit interplay with creamy toast characters in this highly complex, cool climate style of chardonnay.
The 2015 vintage was a year of moderate yields and high quality. Consistent spring and summer rainfall kept canopies fresh and vibrant right throughout the growing season. Minimal frost events and generally good weather during flowering saw solid fruit set in the majority of subregions and subsequently much kinder yields than the previous year. Unusually mild conditions during ripening, with few heat spikes and sprinklings of light rain made for a challenging growing season. Fruit was picked towards the riper end of the spectrum, yet retaining plenty of natural acid. A year of very solid wines with great acidity and concentrated flavour.
At Bay of Fires Winery the philosophy on Chardonnay production is to preserve to bottle the essential characteristics of the vineyard fruit and create the highest quality blend from subregional Tasmania. Gentle handling of the fruit and wine help to achieve this, while restrained winemaking assist in developing the complexity of the final blend.
Bay of Fires have been honing their skill in crafting Tasmanian Chardonnay and understanding their vineyards for over 10 vintages now. Several of the vineyards they source Chardonnay from were planted for them at carefully selected sites. These are now developing in maturity, which translates to better balance and depth of flavour in their wines.
The 2015 Bay of Fires Chardonnay exemplifies this development, and shows the richness and elegance that is so desirable from cool climate Tasmania.

We've secured the remaining library stock of this prestigious Reserve Pinot Gris from Matakana Estate. Until now this lovely oaked Pinot Gris has only been available in select export markets and at Auckland Airport Duty Free stores for $42.50 per bottle. The Matakana region is proving to have great potential to produce quality Pinot Gris wines, and Matakana Estate's aim is to nurture the natural earthy stone-fruit character of this grape—along with the influence of our Matakana vineyard’s terroir. Pinot Gris has elegant fruit characters but the flavours are subtle. This ‘vigorous’ variety needs to be pruned heavily to reduce the yield per... Read More
